Visas / Entry Permits

In Singapore, there's a difference between a visa and a work pass. Let's break them down:

Visas

  • Issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore.

  • Allows you to enter and stay in Singapore for a specific purpose and duration.

There are different types of visas, such as:

  • Short-Term Visit Pass for social visits, tourism, or business meetings.

  • Long-Term Visit Pass for extended stays in Singapore, often for those with family or business ties in the country.

Work Passes

  • Issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of Singapore.

  • Allows foreign professionals and workers to work legally in Singapore.

There are different types of work passes, depending on your salary, skills, and qualifications. Some common ones include:

  • Employment Pass (EP): For professionals with a minimum monthly salary of S$5,000 (S$5,500 for the financial sector). This minimum increases with age.

  • S Pass: For mid-level skilled workers with a monthly salary of at least S$2,500.

  • Work Permit: For foreign workers in lower-skilled occupations.

Here's a deeper dive into the different types of visas and work passes in Singapore:

Visas:

  • Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP): Valid for up to 30 days, with the option to extend for another 30 days. Ideal for short visits like tourism, conferences, or social visits.

  • Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP): Allows for extended stays in Singapore, typically for those with family members or business ties in the country.  There are various sub-categories, including:

  • LTVP+ (Dependent): Issued to spouses and unmarried dependent children of Employment Pass (EP) or S Pass holders.

  • LTVP (EntrePass Dependent): Issued to spouses and unmarried dependent children of EntrePass holders.

  • Student's Pass: Issued to international students enrolled in full-time studies at approved institutions in Singapore.

Work Passes:

  • Employment Pass (EP): Designed for professionals, managers, and executives with a minimum qualifying salary (S$5,000 - S$10,500 depending on age and sector). It offers a two-year validity period with the possibility of renewal.

  • S Pass: Suitable for mid-skilled workers with a monthly salary of at least S$2,500. It's valid for a maximum of two years, also with renewal options.

  • Work Permit:  Issued to foreign workers in lower-skilled occupations like construction, manufacturing, and services. The validity period and salary requirements vary depending on the specific job and sector. There are sub-categories like:

  • Work Permit for Foreign Domestic Workers:  For foreign domestic helpers employed by Singaporean households.

  • Work Permit for Confinement Nanny:  For nannies providing temporary childcare support during confinement after childbirth.

  • Work Permit for Performing Artiste:  For foreign artistes performing in Singapore.

  • EntrePass:  Aimed at foreign entrepreneurs looking to establish and run businesses in Singapore. It requires innovative concepts or venture backing and is valid for one year, with renewal options.

  • Personalised Employment Pass (PEP):  A unique pass for highly skilled and talented foreign professionals who can secure employment on their own (without employer sponsorship). It's valid for three years and is not renewable.

  • Work Holiday Pass (WHP):  A six-month work and travel pass for international students aged 18 to 25 from participating countries.
